Boston in December was a hot place to be. So thought the attendees of the Twelfth Systems Administration Conference, LISA '98. You missed it? Read on: Rik Farrow muses on the conference, Tina Darmohray draws a moral from it, and the Conference Reports offer other perspectives.

Something new in the SAGE section: Hal Pomeranz introduces our "How-to Notes" series with a clear and concise set of instructions for installing anonymous FTP. Among other offerings, John Sellens goes to the heart of reliability issues: the users themselves -- how to communicate with them, how to enlist their assistance, and how to keep them informed. And Hal Miller considers the increasingly complex issues of system security.

In the Features section, Dario Forte continues the discussion of security with a survey of current intrusion-detection systems: how effective are they in monitoring and reporting network attacks? Focusing on Squid as a firewall component, Jeffrey Mogul reports on his experience tracking down and eliminating a major inefficiency in Squid's CPU utilization. On a lighter note, Spike Ilacqua 'fesses up to his role in perpetrating the first ISP.
